| 27. 05. 2013 | SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANT OUTPUT RECONSTRUCTION WITH EXTENSION IN THE BALTIC SEA, Liepaja, Latvia.

Liepāja municipal company SIA "Liepajas ūdens" has been successfully implementing the project "Development of water handling facilities in Liepāja" split into several stages for a long time. It is performing the restoration and transformation of the city water supply system both in the city and also in other territories covered by the water handling facilities. The construction of a new outlet of treated waste water located 100 metres South of the existing outlet of waste water treatment facilities of “Liepajas ūdens” is planned during the 3rd stage. Its length equals 1290 metres.

The construction of the outlet in the sea is a very complicated and actually a unique process comprising works both on the shore and on the bottom of the Baltic Sea. Therefore, this was a true challenge to all the experts involved in the construction despite of their considerable experience. The project which is important not only for residents of Liepaja was carried out thanks to the two big construction companies AS ‘UPB”, who was performing the works on the shore, and SIA “BGS”, who was performing the works in the water, joining their forces. The old outlet of the waste water treatment plant located not far from Šķēde was replaced with a new and stronger outlet with a longer expected lifetime in order to ensure that the clean water is let into the sea far enough from the shore after the treatment facilities have performed their task. Taking into account the active processes ongoing in the Baltic Sea and changing the shore line and the embankment by bending rock structures like toys, and the water is spreading to the earth with increasing intensity, multiple risks have to be taken into account. The reconstruction works of the outlet which were started in summer 2012 were performed without disturbing the operation of the existing outlet and without causing any harm to the environment. A special access zone to water was created - the rock structures were covered with sand and rein forced concrete plates from the construction site to the beach for the machinery needed for the construction works. The new outlet from the waste water treatment facilities was laid in the ground along its whole length both on the shore part and along its extension in the water. Following the completion of the construction works attention will be paid to the arrangement of the shore territory, also floating warning signs will be installed according to the agreement with the Sea Administration and the Captain of the Liepaja Port on their location.
