Ģirts Muižnieks solo exhibition GLEZNAS [PICTURES] will be opened on March 6 at 5 p.m. at the Art Gallery of UPB Holding in Liepāja, 9, Dzintaru iela, featuring both, fresh and earlier paintings.
The exhibit develops the theme outlined at Cēsis 2007 Art Festival, focussing on the image of the doll. The origin of the image was the antique doll Bebe Jumeau – the much desired collector’s piece all over the world. Within his exhibition of paintings, Ģirts Muižnieks attempts to analyse the phylosphy behind the concept of a doll. It tells a story about the life of dolls characterized by categories like the banal, the beautiful and the scary. Painting has always served as basis of expression for Ģirts Muižnieks, however it has been subjected to the guideline needs of the plot.
Ģirts Muižnieks was born in 1956 in Riga. He graduated from Latvian Academy of Arts in 1981 and has participated exhibitions since 1980. In 2003, the painter was awarded the Reward of the Year by Latvian Artists’Association for “the flash of painting as a pure substance” in exhibitions Full Dress Portrait (Riga Gallery) and Pictures (Ivonna Veiherte Gallery). In 2007, Ģirts Mižnieks received the Award of the Year in Culture granted by Diena daily newspaper. His paintings are included in collections of the Latvian National Museum of Arts, Museum of the Latvian Artists’ Association, Georgia Museum of Arts, as well as the collections of the Central Bank of Europe, Ministry of Culture of Russia and the Tretiakov Gallery.
